Reading the poem, Transmission, by US writer Ashleigh Lambert, generated thoughts in me about the ways so many of us now present our identities to the world via computer and mobile technology. It inspired me to explore translating the written piece to audio-visual media. With a voice performance of the poem recorded by Nic S., I then searched for images that were legally available for re-integration into a new creative piece. After a typically time-consuming process in seeking out this “found media”, an instrumental music track soon came to me as well.

This was by Adrian Carter in Sheffield, UK, who I have collaborated with over the net for more than a decade. With the visual and audio elements now at hand, I edited together the pieces into a first draft video, this being the most demanding, and also the most satisfying, part of the work. I sent the first draft to Adrian, and we emailed back and forth between Australia and the UK a few times, making improvements to the audio and visual streams. The different aspects of this process led to this video of Transmission.
